Three Albuquerque High School Special Education students formed a team which won third place in the 2018 International Roborave Entrepreneurial Challenge. The event was held on May 9-12.  The students competed against teams from the United States and other countries.

Mary Cherino, Dante Van Orten and Asael Diaz created a robotic dog and were required to present the invention and discuss it with judges and the public. The students are part of AHS's STEAM Team, a group of students interested in science, technology, engineering art and math.

Also representing Albuquerque High School and the STEAM Team were the club's KPOP Dance Group, the Black Diamonds. The dancers performed at the Roborave International Social which was attended by students from 22 countries.

Science teacher and STEAM Team Sponsor, Valerie Kovach and Educational Assistant, Jean Hart attended the Roborave's Teacher's Robot Academy.

"The students hope to keep learning about robotics and programming and improve the design for the 2019 competition," says Ms. Kovach.

You have been diagnosed with diabetes type 2." Those are the words that are all too common today, which over 30 million Americans hear annually. But who is more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes? According to the Centers for Disease Control, families of color, primarily African-American and Hispanic people are at a higher chance of developing type 2 diabetes for their genetic makeup as well as their diet.
     The
known as PAUSE, began to think, “Well, what can we do to help the our New Mexican community?” PAUSE, along with a devoted health teacher at AHS, Ms. Joan Newsom, and Ms. Wilma John, a caring leader at the AHS School Based Health Center, began to plan a diabetes awareness event.
The event was named Take a Bite out of Diabetes and took place at the AHS lecture hall on a Wednesday night on April 18, 2018. The event consisted of tables showcasing local resources and diabetes education. The tables included UNM Truman Health Services, a PAUSE education table, UNM nutrition students, a spin the wheel with nutrition facts, the UNM HSC Office for Diversity, a local podiatrist from NM Feet, and a nutrition graduate student from UNM. A healthy dinner of veggie tacos was served along with chia seed pudding for desert.
The Take a Bite out of Diabetes event was a total success due to PAUSE members, AHS staff and students, parents, local physicians, and local resources from around the city of Albuquerque. PAUSE is looking forward to Taking a Bite out of Diabetes next year to reach even more community members.

October 20, 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians:

I wanted to make you aware of an incident in which an Albuquerque High School student allegedly was forced into a car by gunpoint and robbed on his way to the bus stop near Carlisle and Gibson around 6:30 a.m. Friday.

The student was released by his abductors a short while later. He was unharmed, though he was quite shaken by the experience.

The car was described as a small, red-colored vehicle. The abductors were described as two Hispanic females and one Hispanic male. The car was driven by one of the females.

APS Police are investigating along with the Albuquerque Police Department. They also have stepped up patrol in the neighborhood.

This is a very serious situation and we are thankful that no one was harmed. We are asking that our students be especially vigilant as they walk to and from school or the bus stop, and we discourage them from walking alone.

Please contact us if you have questions or if you or your child has any additional information to share.

Hi all,

Just a quick update as we start the regular season as I know it can sometimes be difficult to get correct information out of the girls. We open today with a home game against Cibola. Varsity kicks off at 3:30 and JV at 5:15. This is a huge match for us and we could use all the support we can get! We always encourage JV to be there to root an Varsity and Varsity to stay and provide the same support for the JV squad. As of last year, there is a fee to get in to the game -- $5 for adults, $3 for students, players get in free. There are no pets allowed so please leave them at home. Fans from either team are not permitted to sit behind either goal or directly behind the teams' benches at any point during the game so please be sure to either sit on the East side of the field or across the street near the building if you choose not to pay the entry fee. Let's represent Albuquerque High well and have good sportsmanship while supporting our athletes. Excited to see you all out there!

Business:

First -- AHS Soccer Gear

Lori Roybal has been working hard to get all gear (girls' and parents) out to the two teams. Lori likes to give things out as she gets them done so we don't have to wait to get everything at once. So far the girls should have received a grey warm up shirt, a black sparkle bulldog shirt, a draw-string bag, and parent orders. Gaby and Alisa were given a small instead of extra small (my mistake). Sorry! I have their XS for them once they bring the ones I gave them back. If you or your player is missing any of this, please let Lori or myself know. We are hoping to get the long sleeves at practice on Monday and the sweat pants and sweat shit will come once they are finished. Thank you for your patience.

Secondly -- Fundraising

I have been working with Mrs. Brister (thank you) to organize a fundraiser as our budget is tight this year and every little bit will help. We are looking at doing a Goodwill donation drive on October 7. The girls will be responsible for advertising the drive and helping load and direct donations. Without the proper advertisement this fundraiser will not be successful so once we get the flyers, please encourage them to advertise and get people out to the school to donate. Once everything is set in stone, I will send an email with more information. Lori Roybal has donated some extra shirts for fundraising purposes as well. As soon as I get it cleared through the correct people we will get that going. Thank you Lori. I know some team dinners have been set through the girls and some parents. Thank you to those of you who have volunteered your time and effort to help with those. If anyone else has any other fundraiser ideas or wants to organize a team dinner (jv or varsity or both) please feel free to contact me so we can get it organized. I can use all the help I can get as far as these two things go to build our program.

Lastly -- UNM Game

KC Smith has been communicating with the the UNM women's soccer coach to arrange a tour and game for the girls. Again, I will have more information next week but I will tell you what I do know so you can start preparing. On September 22nd, the UNM Women's team has a game at 7:30pm against UNLV. Both Varsity and JV will meet at the UNM practice field (where the UNM summer tournament was held) at 5:15. At 5:30 someone will take the girls on a tour behind the scenes -- locker room, pre-game talk etc...The tour will last approximately one hour. After the tour, we would like to have a pot luck or cook out or something so the girls can eat between the tour and the game. This will only be possible if we can get some parents to volunteer so PLEASE email me with ideas. Kickoff is at 7:30 and we are requiring that the girls stay through the first half to observe the teams as a means of improving their own skills. Unfortunately, UNM cannot let us in the game for free, however they will only charge AHS players $3 each. We have to pay UNM in advance so we are requiring the girls to bring $3 for the game no later than September 20th. KC will collect the money from the JV girls and I will collect the money from the Varsity girls. In order for this to be successful we need at least two adults to help chaperone the tour and more to help with food between the tour and the game. Please email me individually if you are able to help ASAP!!

So far the season is off to a great start. I think I can speak for the entire coaching staff when I say we are excited to see how the rest of the season plays out. Thank you all for your support.

Dear Albuquerque High School Community,

As you may know by now, our letter grade from the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) has decreased this year.  The NMPED issued this penalty because we did not meet the requirement of administering state standardized tests to 95% of our students.  We had 92% participation last school year and look to make every effort to improve this coming school year.

It pains me to see Albuquerque High School labeled this way.  I love this school and its community.  The NMPED grade we received does not accurately reflect the hard work, dedication, and tremendous success of our staff and students.  Listed below are just a few of the many recent accomplishments and recognitions we have earned.

The Embassy of Spain in the United States has recognized AHS as the top high school in the United States for Bilingual Spanish Education.

US News and World Report ranked AHS the high school with the highest level of College Readiness in APS.

Within the last three years, US News and World Report ranked AHS in the top 5 high schools in New Mexico and in the top 2% of high schools in the United States.

Albuquerque High School has one of the highest pass rates in Albuquerque Public Schools for AP Spanish Language, AP Calculus AB, and AP Calculus BC.

Last year, we had more Ivy League college acceptances than any other APS high school.

I want to personally thank my staff and students for their hard work. This grade does not reflect who we are as a school and community. Let's continue to move forward and continue to make Albuquerque High School the school we know we truly are.
